Whales I Series, 2008-2009

the last whale

22h x 28w • 2008 • $700

Hand-dyed and commercial cotton, stamped and appliquéd with encaustic and oil stick overlayer.

This lone whale embodies the curved beauty of a whale diving and then turning to surface for air. The surrounding fishing nets and drops of whale oil used to light New England parlors in the 1800s create a somewhat dark image. It shows up well in a well-lit space; oil stick gold highlights the net shapes impressed into the wax surface.
