crusades Series, 2006-2008

When turned upside down, the arched doorway of a medieval cathedral becomes the shield of the crusading monks. Strong colors from the banners of the Christian Crusades were used to echo how this warlike energy energized the Dark Ages. It was no accident that this series heated up right along with the invasion of Iraq.

Beginning in 2007 I began to add acrylic medium to these fabric collages to add depth in a faux encaustic technique and to bind the fabric images to the support boards.

Format: Except for Fanning the Flames, an artquilt, these works all share the format of 22" x 28" (before framing) mixed media mounted on stretcher bars.
